Custom web development: what it actually changes for your project

Custom doesn't mean starting from scratch or blowing up your budget. Here is how we build websites and applications: industry models, technologies chosen to fit the need, and a site you fully own.

Many businesses come to us with the same sentence: "I looked at the off-the-shelf options, but none of them really fits how we work." That is exactly where custom development starts to make sense.

Custom does not mean reinventing everything, and it does not mean blowing up your budget. It means one simple thing: your website should adapt to your business, not the other way around. Here is how we work at HK Web Production, and what it changes for your project.

Web development, in plain terms

Web development means designing, building and launching a digital tool that answers a specific need. In our case, that covers:

  • a showcase website that presents your business and generates enquiries;
  • an online store with catalogue, cart and secure checkout;
  • a custom web application: internal tool, business platform, management dashboard;
  • a client or member area protected by authentication;
  • the redesign of an existing site that has become slow, dated or hard to maintain.

Before a single line of code is written, there is always an analysis phase. That is what turns an idea into a realistic specification: which features genuinely matter, which ones can wait for a second version, which technical constraints to anticipate, and above all how much it costs. An honest quote comes out of that step, not out of guesswork.

What you see, and what you don't

A web project plays out on two levels. The distinction is worth knowing, because it explains a large part of the price gap between two quotes.

The visible part: the front-end

This is everything your visitor sees and interacts with: layout, images, menus, buttons, animations, forms. The work consists of turning a design into a real interface that feels smooth on mobile as well as on a large screen.

Three things really matter here:

  • Responsive design: more than half your traffic comes from mobile. An interface that breaks on a phone drives people away.
  • Performance: a slow site loses visitors before it is even seen. We optimise images, code and loading from the design stage, not as an afterthought.
  • Accessibility: sufficient contrast, keyboard navigation, alternative text. We follow WCAG best practices so your site is usable by everyone.

The invisible part: the back-end

This is the engine. It handles data, user accounts, payments, email delivery, security and backups. None of it is visible on screen, and yet that is where the real complexity of a project lives.

Concretely: when a client fills in your form, the back-end validates the information, stores it, notifies you and sends an acknowledgement. When they pay for a subscription, it secures the transaction and updates their access. It is invisible, but it is what makes a website actually work.

Custom doesn't mean starting from scratch

This is the most common misunderstanding. Some providers offer two extremes: either a ready-made template barely touched up, or a full ground-up build at a premium price. We chose a third, more honest path.

We give you website models by industry: wealth management firm, restaurant, hair salon, garage, photographer, winery, cosmetics e-commerce, and more. These are complete, working mock-ups you can browse online.

Their purpose is not to be delivered as they are. They exist to anchor the discussion: you immediately see a structure, a page rhythm, a way of highlighting what matters. From there, we adapt the model entirely to your identity — your colours, your logo, your copy, your photos, your features.

The benefit is twofold: you save time on design back-and-forth, and the budget goes into what genuinely matters for you rather than reinventing a structure that already works.

And if your need is truly specific — a business tool, a platform with particular rules — then we do start from a blank page. The right starting point depends on the project, not on dogma.

The technologies we use, and why

We do not pick a tool out of habit, but based on your project, your budget and the environment you already have. Here are the main building blocks of our toolbox.

Next.js, React and TypeScript for modern websites and applications. This is what delivers fast, well-indexed interfaces that are pleasant to use. Strict TypeScript spares us a large share of bugs before launch.

Drupal, our speciality for years. It is the right choice when there is a lot of content, several user profiles, fine-grained permissions or complex business rules. We build custom modules and API integrations.

WordPress, when the goal is for you to publish easily yourself, on a controlled budget. We do not stack up random plugins: a clean theme, carefully chosen extensions, and a back office that is simple to handle.

PHP and Laravel for server-side application development. Plus, depending on the project: databases, third-party APIs, online payment, authentication, email delivery, and so on.

What if your project runs on something else?

Drupal and WordPress are our specialities, but our offer does not stop there. We are not a single-technology agency that squeezes every project into the same mould.

If you come to us with a site built on another CMS, another framework or an in-house tool already in place, we study your environment and work with it: taking over what exists, a gradual redesign, or connecting to your current systems. And if your need calls for a technology we don't use day to day, we will tell you honestly rather than forcing an ill-suited solution.

The useful question is never "which technology do you master?" but "what serves this project best over the next five years?". Describe your situation and we will tell you what is realistic.

One point of method that matters, whichever technology we choose: we deliver clean, documented code. In practice, that means that two years from now a change remains simple and affordable — and that you are not locked into one provider for the smallest edit.

How a project unfolds

Our process comes down to three deliberately readable stages.

1. Discovery and quote. We clarify your goals, your audience and your budget. You receive a detailed, clear quote with no surprises. No work starts without your approval.

2. Design and development. Mock-ups, iterations, then step-by-step development. You review intermediate versions regularly — you do not discover your website at the very end.

3. Launch and support. Go-live, performance measurement, adjustments. We stay available to help your site evolve.

One principle makes everything simpler: you have a single point of contact. The person who listens to you is the one who builds your project. No hand-off after signing, no broken telephone between a salesperson, a project manager and a developer.

What is included by default

Some things should never be billed as extras. With us, they are part of the job:

  • Technical SEO: semantic structure, metadata, structured data, sitemap, clean URLs. Your site is ready for Google from day one.
  • Performance: optimised images, controlled loading, monitored response times.
  • Accessibility: WCAG best practices, keyboard navigation, verified contrast.
  • Responsive: mobile, tablet, desktop.
  • Bilingual if you need it: French and English, with proper handling of language versions for search engines. Useful when your clientele goes beyond your borders.
  • Compliance: Quebec's Law 25 and the European GDPR, consent management, privacy policy.

And ownership? The website is entirely yours. You receive the code, the credentials and full ownership of the project on delivery.

After launch

A website is not a finished object you hand over and forget. It lives: browsers evolve, security flaws appear, your needs change.

We offer monthly maintenance plans: updates, backups, security monitoring, small improvements and support. You can also reach out on a one-off basis, with no commitment.

You also get a client area: track your projects' progress, access your files and deliverables, invoices, the history of your requests and your exchanges with us — all in one place.

If you would rather manage your own content, we set up a simple admin area so you can edit your text and images with no technical knowledge.

In short

Custom development, the way we practise it, is neither a disguised template nor over-engineering. It means starting from the right place — one of our models or a blank page — then building something that fits your business, that you can grow, and that you own.
